“"I belief Delphi has a fantastic case to be named Cultural Capital of
Europe in 2021. Delphi was the omphalos, the centre of the ancient world
from the 8th century BCE. It was a panhellenic sanctuary of supreme
importance, whose oracle decided the fates of colonies, wars,
institutions of democracy, religious and cultural traditions. It was a
community who survived the Persian and Gaulish invasions in antiquity,
as well as hosted musical and athletic games that were considered on par
with the Olympics for over a millenia. It was a place for philosophical
discussion and thought.
And Delphi has continued to play that role. When it was dug up out of
the earth in the 1890s, there had been a pan European fight to obtain
the rights to excavate - one that went beyond Europe also to include
American. Everyone wanted to be involved with Delphi's story. During the
Second world war, the site bore witness to a pitched battle between
German and Greek resistance fighters which echoed the Persian and
Gaulish invasions of the past. And since then, it has been central to
Europe's goal of mutual understanding and the creation of international
community. The E4 Walking Paths cross through Delphi. It is Greece's 2nd
most visited site, bringing in millions of tourists every year from
communities around the world. It is a place where people understand the
ancient world, and where, crucially, they feel most strongly a
connection to it.
There is something in the air still today at Delphi - a place which is
thoroughly of the 21st century, and which is, at the same time, timeless
- allowing us space to reflect on our past, present and future. I can
think of no better symbol for the future of Europe than Delphi: a place
that reminds us that humanity has always been beset by conflict and
difference, but which can, ultimately, come together to create
astonishing and wonderous things."
